Is the Infrared Thermal Camera Convenient to Use?

There is no point in buying an FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) camera or any similar camera for that matter if you can’t fully maximise its usability and features, or even if you don’t enjoy using it anyway. 

One factor that can have a huge impact on the usability and function of an infrared camera is its battery. Thermal cameras come in stationary (those installed in a single location such as a wide detection surveillance camera) and mobile versions (such as handheld cameras used by building technicians for inspections.) If you plan to buy a mobile thermal camera, then you should pay attention to the battery. 

One consideration is that battery’s make. Nowadays, infrared thermal imaging cameras come with lithium ion batteries, which works and last for a pretty long time as compared to other types of batteries. That being said, always go for cameras with lithium ions.
In addition, you may want to purchase an extra battery just in case the one you’re using runs out in the middle of a job. It can be really frustrating to have to stop your work just because the battery in your thermal camera died. More often than not, such a situation will delay the completion of the task which can result in very negative consequences – think along the lines of a military surveillance gone wrong or an electrical mishap occurring because your battery and the camera failed to work. The good thing is that many manufacturers and distributors often sell infrared thermal cameras together with extra battery packs, but just in case your purchase doesn’t come with one, then be prepared to shell out some extra cash and buy yourself one.

With regards to the above, be sure that you have a charging station or dock. Some manufacturers have accessories that will allow you to charge your batteries in your truck or van, which can be a great help in ensuring that you have access to fully charged batteries for your infrared camera wherever your work may be. 
Another factor to consider when it comes to usability is the camera’s weight. Infrared thermal imaging cameras come in different shapes and sizes, and these will determine how heavy the camera will be. As much as possible, choose an infrared camera that is lightweight and has an ergonomic design. This is especially true if you constantly use and have to carry your camera around with you.
